nota bene

I put up a post at Balloon Juice looking at the common claim that we are in an educational crisis. Check it out. The deliberately portentous title, combined with the URL, was supposed to be a bit of a self-mocking joke, but I don't think anybody got it.

I would have appreciated this column more if you had made a dig about education reform writers' love of data for schools, but refusal to use data themselves.

And yes, I understand why you don't do that. You are interested in actually convincing people and not just preening for the likeminded.

I enjoyed this post and am looking forward to the two teased follow-ups, even if they don't have gratuitous McArdle bashing.

I feel like the article could have used for a more explicit mention about how metrics for each demographic sub-group are improving, but because some of the worse-testing sub-groups are expanding rapidly, we get an impression of a declining or stagnating system on the whole. I'm pretty sure it was you that mentioned this when I saw it earlier but that's a point that I think gets glossed over by everyone way too easily and needs to be hammered.
