Sincere question: do you dislike rap covers mainly because they're annoying and precious, or is it more about a racial problem? My first instinct is to say that people often enjoy incongruity in music, like when Weird Al did his polka medley of grunge songs. But I can see that incongruity isn't the whole of the story, and would like to know what else is going on.

I just think it's a very tired trope, which is particularly a problem because people think that they're being novel. When Jeff Tweedy recently did a series of covers of the Black Eyed Peas (which I acknowledge is not rap music), he was doing it in this precise "look at how funny and unusual this is!" way, when in fact that shtick is as old as the hills.

Best examples of the genre?

I seem to recall Jonathan Coulton's folk "Baby Got Back" in ~2004/5? Don't know when Ben Folds started doing Dr. Dre, though. -K.

I could be entirely wrong about this, but didn't you once post a link to a Pomplamoose video?
