You should post your previous thing about Ivys on Balloon Juice ... maybe you could cross-post blog entries? Though I guess your pieces there have been slightly more polished than an average blog post, almost article-ish ...
Like you, I am also fond of education, though a little bit can be a dangerous thing.Marcel
That was a pleasure to read. So much of what we hear is about Hobbesians we never really encounter. People are moral, are interested, are interesting are helpful and are hopeful. It is the view you express so well here that explains how there have come to be so many billions of us. If we were all as selfish, greedy and lazy as the dominant narratives of our political economy insist, there is no way we'd have made a success as a species!
I'm still struck by the sheer intellectual fail of your "I can't vote for Obama because Glenn Greenwald made shit up" post. It's as if reality is too much for some people.
Obama's record on civil liberties is terrible, and for me, disqualifying. That's just me.
You relied on Greenwald for your data and he is not reliable. Not even close. And that's aside from the squalid moral calculus that lets one who refuses to choose between the SDP and the Nazis pretend to have maintained some purity. Moral choices are made in this world, not in utopia. That's why they are hard.We don't have to even get into the level of historical ignorance needed to think that things would be otherwise.
I am, indeed, making a moral choice, and you'll note that I've never said "is as bad as," and wouldn't.
and your moral choice is to step aside and let the GOP take over the WH again, after Katrina, after Padilla, after Iraq, after Abu Ghraib. And since Obama' civil liberties standards are BETTER than that of every Democratic President since FDR if not before and certainly not comparable to those of the Republicans, you essentially opt out of US political life.
I really enjoyed that thoughtful article. As someone who used to teach those sorts of comp classes, and who still teaches in literature, I share your thoughts on these students. One thing I would say is that I do think there is implicit pressure on students to perform a sort of dispassionate distance from education and the life of the mind, and that that pressure is largely generated by a contemporary society that has a vested interest in keeping them incurious. I think it's to your credit as a teacher that your classes elicit a quite different response.
