James Poulos wrote a flattering and searching post in response to what I had to say regarding George Will and his insistence on stasis.
The only thing of consequence I have in response is that, yes, my second paragraph makes little sense. This is merely to say that I am trapped in this startling and confused whirlpool we've labeled politics, and as I reach out for odd branches to hold on to, I occasionally lose sight of consistency or even coherence. I've done it before, and will continue to do so, especially when discussing simple matters like need, compassion, and the meaning of community. Unlike James, I am not a Christian. I have no expectation of revelation and I don't think there will come a time when such basic questions are resolved for me. So let me make myself plain: my politics will always contain a basic incoherence. Never let it be said that I'm consistent, or fair, or entirely intelligible. My detractors can feel free to link back to this post whenever they'd like; my political opinions are a literature of exhaustion.
